THE ART OF THE START
Standing on the edge of a cliff with ten toes hanging over its edge is daunting, but if you’ve calculated the risk, it’s surprising how calm your nerves can be. Maybe there’s ropes supporting you, a parachute on your back, and if either of these options fail, you’ve softened the patch of grass below. Still remaining is the most important question of all. Why are you standing on the edge of a cliff in the first place?
It's not a risk, if it's a calculated one. Planning tasks that lead to milestones creates understanding of your undertaking. It tests faults in your thinking and pushes you to discover answers. You can get to a point, however, where you’re spending all your time testing and not doing. Don’t worry about perfecting your product or service, just jump to it.
So you’ve made the jump and the stress of it all is standing your hairs on-end. Find time-out to exercise, read a book, wash your car, do cartwheels. It doesn’t matter. This break in the day tends to refocus your energy onto the things you can change and off the things you can’t.
This time-out also helps you review your reasoning. Answer the little man in your head that’s whispering “so what?” Does your actions add to the larger context of society or are you relieved to be covering every possible benefit to soften your own patch of grass.
